Reviewing for UNA MENS

At UNA MENS, reviewers are not simply gatekeepers.

They are careful readers, thoughtful respondents, and contributors to an ongoing intellectual conversation.

We view reviewing as more than a judgment of acceptability. It is a process of helping clarify, test, strengthen, and responsibly situate a piece of work within a wider scholarly conversation.

We ask reviewers to attend especially to (CC-VCR):

Clarity — Is the central question, argument, or signal understandable without flattening the complexity of the work?

Contribution — Does the piece extend, refine, challenge, or reconnect a meaningful conversation?

Validity — Do the evidence, methods, examples, or reasoning support the claims being made?

Context — How does the work sit within relevant scholarly traditions, debates, or emerging directions?

Resonance — Does the piece generate insight, provoke useful reflection, or leave the reader with something worth carrying forward?

Our HI–AI Review Process

UNA MENS is piloting a human–AI collaborative review process designed to reduce unnecessary mechanical burden while preserving reviewer independence, curiosity, and scholarly judgment.

Reviewers may move through five stages:

1. Get oriented → Entry Map
A brief AI-assisted map introduces the manuscript's scholarly terrain, structure, key concepts, and possible reading routes.

2. Read independently → First-Pass Reflection
Reviewers form and record their own interpretation before engaging more deeply with AI-generated perspectives.

3. Optional: Compare perspectives → AI Second-Reader Interpretations
Reviewers may examine a small set of AI-generated interpretations to consider, reject, revise, or ignore.

4. Optional: Investigate → Reviewer-Directed AI Inquiry
Reviewers may use AI as a second reader or scholarly sounding board to investigate questions that emerge from their own reading.

5. Decide → Human Final Review
The reviewer retains responsibility for all final judgments regarding validity, significance, novelty, strengths, limitations, and publication recommendation.

AI is used to support scholarly attention, not replace it.
