Editorial and Peer Review Model

Careful editorial review, with peer review where it matters

Editorial and Peer Review at Una Mens

Every submission to Una Mens receives full human editorial review.

Our review process is designed to support serious scholarship across fields while remaining open to a range of forms, including theoretical, empirical, methodological, reflective, visual, and collaborative work. We aim for review that is clear, rigorous, and useful to both authors and readers.

Submissions are evaluated for:

  • Scholarly clarity: Is the work clear about its aims, claims, methods, and limits?

  • Process transparency: Does the submission adequately describe how the work was made, including any meaningful human, AI, or hybrid contributions?

  • Contribution to inquiry: Does the work deepen, sharpen, challenge, or extend understanding within or across fields?

  • Integrity of presentation: Are evidence, interpretation, authorship, and attribution handled honestly and responsibly?

How review works

All submissions are first read in full by a human editor, who assesses fit, clarity, seriousness, and alignment with the journal’s scope.

Depending on the nature of the work, submissions may then move forward in one or more of the following ways:

  1. Editorial Review
A full human editorial reading focused on fit, clarity, transparency, and readiness.

  2. External Peer Review
Empirical, theoretical, methodological, and discipline-specific submissions may be sent to one or more external readers when independent expertise or disciplinary assessment is needed. Most such submissions are reviewed by two or more readers, though the number may vary depending on the work.

  3. Open or Dialogic Commentary
In selected cases, a submission may be accompanied by signed commentary, reflective response, or parallel discussion when that format better serves the work and its readers.

We do not assume that every valuable submission fits a single review template. At the same time, experimentation is not an excuse for vagueness. Our aim is to support intellectual rigor without flattening emerging forms of scholarship, including work involving AI collaboration, visual thinking, field-based reflection, or cross-disciplinary method.

Final publication decisions remain with the editor.

Transparency and attribution

Submissions may be human-authored, human–AI collaborative, or AI-mediated, provided these contributions are clearly described. Fabricated data, deceptive attribution, uncredited AI-generated writing, or unverifiable claims will not be accepted.

At Una Mens, we believe authorship and process should be made visible whenever they meaningfully shape the work.
